With a sensible approach and the right team, Charleston could be finished for containable cost.

Its a viable project.

As we all find out sensible approach containable cost and boat cannot be used in the same sentence . We all start with this in mind but everything changes plans etc. During the winter I allways have a plan not to make a mess do one job at a time but after 5 seconds look round and see chaos, am I the only one or do others have the same problem . Still it keeps me happy and brain active . Nick

Excellent! I hope the new owner manages to complete the project whilst retaining his health, sanity, and some funds to use it when finished. I will raise a glass to him for his courage, and encourage him to get stuck in and enjoy the project. I will be delighted to watch the progress.

Hi sorry pressed post. !!!
yep the the kind chaps in the white coats have allowed me to take my "Jacket" off.
I am pleased and childishly excited to say i am the new owner of Charleston.
I have purchased from Richard at Chard, we have pumped her out of all the rainwater , sludge etc etc , thank you Richard very very much for all your help on Sunday.
Very doable ??? well i'll let you know on that one!!
I have gazed at these wonderful boats for many many years and even bought a Fairey Huntsman stainless steel swim platform a few years ago , my assumption that would be as near an owner i would get !
Charleston is now ready to be transported from Somerset to West Sussex.
i have spoken to Martin and will send a photographs in due course, the plan is to get her home and let her dry out before we start any works, i have never owned a wooden boat , so this is going to be an interesting run.
Regards
Peter

Brilliant. Good luck with it. Try and do as much as you can yourself. and perhaps take on a jobbing shipwright. Visit up and running boats and look at the pictures on the site. Keep it well protected and keep it dry.
They are lovely boats.

Hi David
yep its very very wet, unfortunately just from the rain !!
not sure how long ago it was IN the water .
It will be stored in a dry barn and left to dry out whilst i figure out how to tackle the mighty beast.
Its sitting on a purpose built frame which appears to support the boat very well, but at some point i will need to get her off the frame to enable complete paint stripping and a decent look at the keel and the infamous keel bolts.

Not sure how to achieve this inside the Barn but be sure there will be pictures and video if my children and grandchildren have their way !!
Regards
Peter

Good Luck with the project, mine wasn't anywhere as much work as yours and it was still a whole load of work, but worth it.

PS I have a friend here in Falmouth who did some work on Charleston when Mr De Savary owned her.

Hi Robin
Yep Keel Bolts are on the list. (the list is a bit long already!!)

Phil
It would be great to chat with your friend, would he have any photos of the boat and particularly the interior ?
The rear cabin is intact, unfortunately in a poor condition, but the main saloon has been pretty much completely dismantled, it has been converted into a fully open area with a semi circular seating arrangement, but thats about it !!

I will be concentrating on the hull and superstructure etc but at some stage the interior will creep up the list , not sure which way that will go, either restore to its original 1972 Boat Show or as Mr PDS had it, which looks like he has used up alot of valuable space.
Regards, Peter

Does Charleston have the strengthening through the middle?

The swordsman does not have keel bolts but its worth checking that it has the later strenthening that Ben mentions.
I would get Martin Mitchel to go over it
