I should explain that I am super interested in this as my Bulldog gearboxes are no good, so I face the same problem. Except I want 2:1 rather than 1.5:1

https://www.prm-newage.com/media/upload ... 0c8f82.pdf

I looked at the PRM750C, its not down angle, its coaxial, just like the Velvetdrives your boat would have had, the same H1 dim looks to be 121.3mm - but unlike the Velvetdrive, you can run the outputs in opposite directions for handed props. Nice. But you would have a 15 degree install, which I guess is fine, cos that's what they were.

PRM dont do a down angle, only a coaxial or drop centre.

I'm going to stop wittering on about gearboxes now. :D :D :D

Rotten wood, logistical challenges, relentless sanding cutting , drinking tea, now trying to figure out gearboxes and actually thinking about it getting wet from something other than the leaks in Charlestons shed !!
It certainly seems the way to go with drop centres, I'll be setting up an engine with a box ( seem to have a selection now !) And " offering it up" , but you are right, we nudged the forward bulkhead up a couple of inches by accident , but with measurements it's very tight for anything other than a Borg Warner 72C.
Has anyone tried a Borg Warner 5000 ?

I know a bloke who has 8 degree down angle ZF 63s in a Swordsman.

I made an Aluminium jig from the engine / box / coupling drawings, then hung the engine mounts from it. I then made up some mock plywood engine support "shoes" to get the correct shapes / check fit / hole positions etc.

The jig has an 8 degree angled block in it and slides over an 1 5/8 shaft, not sure if the Perkins have the feet in the same place but you can borrow it if it is any use. (think I still have it?)

Hi, failed miserably on the Photo uploads sorry !!
Stern tubes X-Ray'd and back in, shafts trued up and in, P-Brackets re-furbed and back on, Rudders all back in, a couple of big smelly lumps of metal to lift in next, but still only one gearbox, if it all fits with the ZF220A , then a serious search will be on.
Does anyone have 3 x Pairs of the Aluminium brackets that stop the windows fully opening ?
Any recommends for Fuel senders that will be compatible with the Perkins gauges ?

They didnt have flexi couplings when built.

I'm in the camp that if shaft alignment is spot on the flexi coupling brings little benefit. Others may have other views?

Gearbox, usual places, ebay, Lancing marine, that fella in Dorset or the findafishingboat website.

That sounds great Ben, i could do without anything between the gearbox and the prop shaft. The ZF220A has pushed the engines up and forward, hopefully do and engine "dry fit" fairly soon, only jigs, frames and the good ol tape measure calcs at moment, oh and insane amounts of Tea and Biscuits !!
Mike B at Lancing Marine have a bright shiny brand new ZF220A on the shelf which is so very tempting !!

I think you get to a point where you just have to crane one in and see how it fits.

On my 31 I set it all up, first one went in fine, second one was out by an inch on one foot. Both sides of the boat not the same!

Tea and biscuits help.

I guess wait till the last minute for a box, if no luck then buy a new one.

Teak Deck, Charleston's decks have had numerous repairs, the ply sub deck has been routed and repaired (tried to load a photo but can't get past "file to large" ) we have caulked and a very very light first sanding. She's had over 20 years exposure to the rain, nothing has stuck to the sandpaper! Just clouds of dust . We are ready to start fitting all the shiny metal bits, do we leave the deck or treat it ??? I know this is a tricky subject but what are everybodies experiences , successes /failures , I need the deck to last another few years before there or if any money for a new batch of teak !!
