Custom Yachts had worked hard to prepare a realistic quote and specification for the internal refit. The existing fixtures had been stripped out so we could really see what was happening behind the scenes. Mark Lewis had previously refitted another H28 so had a good feel for the pitfalls and had already dealt with many of the “structural issues as part of the hull repairs. One of the key issues was to agree the actual layout to establish the position of the bulkheads so the external fixings could proceed.
Apparently the Midnight Blue layout was unusual in that there was a twin berth in the bow and a single berth on the starboard side. Galley and heads on the port side. For two people this was not ideal and a bit unsociable sitting side by side. We also established that at some time Midnight Blue had skegs.
So we moved to a more traditional layout, galley opposite the heads, two seats on either side and a twin berth forward. We also increased the width of the heads by 100mm which made a huge difference.
We spent ages planning the detail and in particular the storage. New water storage was located under the helm position, it was right in the bow which Bill Dunlop was not happy about. We allowed for a small Eberspacher heater, the new galley would be like a Tardis in that it was compact but the amount of space we created was huge, accommodating a hob, oven sink and fridge and loads of storage. White T&G bulkheads, teak trim and lockers, teak and holly floor and LED lights in a white head linings.
