Boating for softies

Post by JohnSK »

Here's a bit of advice if you have got to the stage in restoration where you are considering the soft furnishings; particularly the bunk cusshions.
Having just spent the Royal Southern weekend sleeping on the standard foam bunks I am now straightened out but feel that life could be better with a more comortable approach.
The standard foam appears to start life at 4" and of course is placed on solid wood. We are not going to get to the luxury of the bedding on modern boats but could I suggest that if you are reupholstering you consider scrapping the current cushions and replacing with at least 6" thick.
Your wallet will not be too critical but your back will bless you.

Never a true word spoken, we have got 3" foam on our bunk cushions and yes cant walk in the mornings and two years ago whilst on holiday and spending 3 weeks on board, had to go to Poole General with severe back pain, nearly had to get winched of the boat first.

So we are now this season getting the cushions re upholstered and will definitely be using 6" foam.

Careful - it might be fine in a 31, but remember it also has an impact on sitting headroom and knee space for dining . . .

Hi Charles hope your keeping well, knee space not a problem as we don't have a table in the cabin, we have our table and dine out in the aft cockpit. We tend to do our slobbing out and sleeping down below so 6" foams won't be too much of a problem.
