Engine room - rusty nuts and bolts

I have for some years put off touching up nuts and bolts in the engine room which have started to show signs of peeling paint and rust or oxidisation, both on the hotter parts of the engine and general fastenings which don’t get hot having only used WD-40 to keep the moisture and rust from getting worse, sometime with the resulting smell of vaporising WD-40!

Well…time to tackle the issue and wonder what material, primers, paint, rust eaters/inhibitors/oils the learned members would recommend – the object not being concourse(where the fitting has to be removed/cleaned/baked etc) but a lasting ‘touch-up’ which will stop deterioration and leave a presentable/decent finish to last a few years at least.

(I am normally keeping the engine room well ventilated by keeping the hatches open and a cold fan going to circulate the air to reduce the damages of stagnant damp air and assist drying. There is normally no presence/leaks of either salt nor fresh water, just normal English dampness!)

Bondaprimer Per.
I used it on the TR3A and it has worked well.Kurust also worked well after wire brushing prior to primer. On the boat I am using the spray primer supplied by Steve, our ex engineer.

Thanks David for the suggestions which I will look into further - Not heard of "Bondaprimer" before but if it is good enough for a car it should work well on a boat...

Hi Per

I have used red oxide primer to good effect many times, good degrease, two coats of red oxide, two top coats.

On the T6.354 worth adjusting the tappets, new rocker cover gaskets with plenty of RTV, particular care around the back, then doing the repaint, you'll be able to see any leaks from the rocker cover which the T6's are prone to.

Thanks Ben for your suggestion on paint choice....

I had the foresight a couple of years ago to do the tappets and cover and will pray they still remain leak free when the engines are started up post the two year layup!
