Fairey Rotodyne.

Post by Ben »

As far as I know its only recently been possible to listen to a sound bite of the Rotodyne.

The text helps to put into context.

(I'm afraid this really isn't very exciting, sorry!)

I still fly from White Waltham airfield and some of the older members remember very clearly the Rotodyne flying in and out of there. They all said that it was loud enough to stop a conversation from five miles away and, in the takeoff and landing phase, was utterly deafening. A magnificent piece of engineering, the idea of it flying in and out of city centres was just impossible.

The predecessor of the Rotodyne, the smaller Fairey gyrodyne could be seen at the ATC huts in central Southampton for many years
