Matt,
Speaking to Alan it sounded like a better option to renew the whole thing just in case you find out that there's a problem with the bearing after you have fitted the new seals! Much cursing would follow!
I think I gave you Alan's home number and he should be at home today - best have a chat with the man who knows all about these things.
He thought you might have a '2 pipe jobby' on the seal - sounds like worth replacing both with his MkII version if one has gone

I've been away for a little while. I managed to get the shaft dia. It came out as 36.25 mm. Which is a little over 1 3/8 ", well much closer than 1 1/4 " anyhow.
The glands seem to me secured by a length of flexible coupling (hose) secured with doubled hose clamps. This should mean replacement will be easier, if I'm correct (vis alignment with shaft etc.) ?
The glands are the double pipe versions with the outflow directed through the exhaust elbow. Incidentally I had a leak in the Stb’d elbow where the outflow (manifold) spigot met the main elbow. After re-welding the spigot it broke off due to the heat (must be cast) so I am in the process of fab’ing a new one and will braze it on.
I managed to put together a list of jobs to get her Bristol like, it features 26 entries. Looking forward to the fun ahead.
