Trim Tab replacement

Post by shayles »

Hi,

I am in the process of removing and replacing the trim tabs on my Triana Tantarella, it's a fairly complex job as the tabs and actuators are mounted internally inside a water-tank that is constructed using the hull itself so access is very difficult.

The tabs are badly corroded and one of the rams is completely inoperable and a couple of hydraulic specialists have condemned it. Would be much easier to replace the rams and tabs 'like-for-like' but the manufacturer isn't obvious and they aren't an obvious well known make. From the pictures would anyone have any clue on who may have manufactured these tabs ?

Any help or advice gratefully received

Thanks and kind regards to all,

Steve

There is little to be lost by giving the tabs a really good clean which will enable you to take a view on whether they are salvageable. Looking at the pictures, I wouldn't bother trying to repair the rams. What would be good is to understand any specs of the originals - stroke length, power, pressure etc. A longer or shorter ram can be accommodated either by a block to lengthen a short ram or moving the top mounting for a longer ram. You will want to get something marine spec to deal with the salt (not mild steel). A quick google search for Stainless hydraulic ram gives some options. I will be very surprised if it isn't a double acting ram - don't get single acting unless the originals were. Pins for the ram to fit the holes in the tab and at the top shouldn't be too difficult to make up in the lathe. Whereabouts are you?

Should have added that a picture of where they go in the tank would also help understanding. For my money I wouldn't want a hydraulic system in the water tank for contamination either way. This may be an opportunity to re-engineer access.

If you end up replacing the trim tabs, have a word with the racing community.
I have seen the rib reinforced alloy type, similar to the Tantarella on Class 1 boats in the past!
