Stern glands

Post by Midnight Blue »

Im having problems repairing a stern gland for my Huntsman 28.
Does anybody have one or maybe two Alan Burnard watercooled stern glands with water inlets and outlets for 1 1/4 shaft diameter?
If so can you let me know.
Thanks
Paul

That sounds encouraging, Paul!! I would suggest that Gordon is your man for this?

Always worth remembering the old adage - "The devil makes work for idle glands"... I'll get my coat.

In his later years AVB was getting these made. Albeit the mark 2 version where the cooling water exited down the tube. There must be a drawing somewhere.

Peter, I've got these on My Swordsman - https://www.shaft-seals.co.uk/sureseal-imperial/

Found them to be excellent, Swordsman is 1" 5/8 shaft size.

PS also have a pair of refurbed props, but it'll depend what engines and boxes you go for.

Perfect, Cheers Phil , I'll have a look, we are quite a way off any noisy and oily bits, but it's nice to be ready.
We have the rudders and tubes out, quite a bit of rot to repair where they pass through the hull.
Is there a recommended company to give them a good going over ? Or is just a clean up and re-grease ?

Any good engineering shop (particularly one that works on marine bits) should be able to check them over for you, but tbh the wear in these would probably be minimal given the amount of work they do (even at 50 yo) as long as they've been greased etc, as they have quite a long contact length over the bearing area.

I wouldn't expect to see any significant wear on the tubes or the stainless stocks unless the boat has spent a long time in silty water.

The biggest issue I'd say is electrolytic action causing
de-zincification of the bronze alloy, that said, those old bronzes were pretty resilient to attack anyway, but check for light pinks in the bronze, and if so, has it gone crumbly, but that should be easy to spot.

Rudder posts, once cleaned off a careful inspection for cracks around the flange on the bottom is needed as they are prone to cracks.
