Wanted: Campbell Christina steering wheel

Post by martinh »

Looking for a Bruce Campbell steering wheel as fitted to Christinas. I have pix of the steering wheel boss but would love to see/buy the genuine item.

Martin - I'#m sure you know most of this from your motorsport.

The Red Biddy boss is a 'Formula' one. Quite rare. For the Lotus column that would be very valuable.

The others are all Mota Lita, Mountney, Les Leston or Formula. Lots on ebay.

What are the splines you are trying to fit? Probably 36 or 48.

(I happen to know a bit about this having just been through a 5 steering wheel drama on the Gilbern trying to ditch the old Rallying wheel for a bigger 15" one suitable for the road)

Thank you Charles! A great collage. Thank you Ben for the summary of wheel suppliers!

To me, this is what the Forum is all about: Asking a question and being both informed and educated by the sharing of answers and/or information received.

On Blue Blazes there was a Moto-Lita steering wheel that came with the boat and I have to assume it was fitted at some stage. I've bought a small piece of shaft with the right number of splines from a kit-car supplier (e-bay of course). But at only 13.5 inches diameter the wheel is a tad small although I'm sure the 'James Bond lady' referred to in my article in the current Club Journal will transform the appearance of the wooden rim. If all else fails I'll experiment with different lengths in the steering linkage to get the right 'feel' at the helm (somewhere I have a 4-bar linkage analyser).

But to my eye nothing beats a Nardi steering wheel; lovely proportions and so elegant.
