OK. So a secondhand box may sort your gearbox issues but it could be a can of worms.
A rebuilt box from Lancing Marine will have a guarantee.
I might have a secondhand pump though which for £100.00 would reduce your overhaul costs by £150
If its of interest let me know.
I have a "scrap box" but I believe the pump to be OK.
Without looking I don't know if it is the later pump.

Thanks for your reply...

I would hope that anyone selling a box (or anything else) on the club forum would be honest about the condition.

The rebuild cost of the box I have (at Lancing Marine) comes to (very nearly) £1200 and that is without a new pump as, at present, they are saying the pump is probably OK...
The warranty is on the new parts only...not the labour and not anything else...

I can buy a fully reconditioned box from Marine Transmissions with a 12month warranty (on the complete unit) for £1100 exchange or £1300 outright...

I have also found an uprated 72c (with the terminator kit) at Seahorse Power for £1250....again it is a fully rebuilt and warrantied unit...

By my reckoning, that makes Lancing Marine expensive...especially as they are only warrantying the fitted parts.

I was hoping someone may know of a cheaper, known good, gearbox somewhere waiting for a new home

At present, I'm inclined to pay Lancing the couple of hours labour charge incurred so far, get my box of bits back and buy one of the reconditioned units with a decent warranty...
I would then still have the old box either to rebuild as and when I have time and find some cheap(er) parts, or that someone else could buy to use as a source of spares...

I am further put off Lancing Marine, despite their obvious good efforts so far, as they are advertising on Boatshop24 the same parts they have quoted me for at a discount amounting to 15-20%...

Lancing do seem to have got rather expensive.
FWIW I wasn't implying that anyone would sell something that was other than OK on the Forum. But if say someone had posted a link to something advertised elsewhere...
Then clearly it's provenance might be unknown.
David's box seems the answer to your problem.
Circa £50 on a pallet would be an ideal solution... If you are in Hampshire then Jim at Hampshire Freight in Eastleigh can arrange collection and onward transport.

Hi Guys, a chap I know recently sold two similar gearboxes within 48 hours of them being made available at over £1250 each +VAT without warranty. Like it or not BW 72's are a very good gearbox and are regularly in demand. Lancing prices are usually not far off what is a fair, market price, and LM sells all over the world. If offered a good one for less than £1,000 consider yourself lucky.

I have been offered a fully reconditioned one with 12mth warranty for £1200

Given the options, I am going to be going with this option...I don't fancy doiing it again in 6/12/18 mths when a s/h, unwarrnatied 'box gives up again!
