Borg Warner Velvet Drive 72C

Post by jpwilk »

Good morning,

I’m in the process of re-engining Europa II and using the opportunity to recondition/replace one of my Borg Warner Velvet Drives 72C 1:1 which currently drags slightly in neutral.

Does anyone know where I could get my box reconditioned or does anyone have one they are willing to sell?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Kindest regards
Jamie

Hi Jamie,

Mike Wills in Poole is a good place to start.

Although it's not impossible to refurbish them yourself if you have the manual and a reasonable toolkit.

J R Peachment Ltd Brundall Norfolk successfully repaired BW box some years ago.
With their hydraulic drive system they must understand the industry.
If it ain't broke don't fix it.......this issue should only be the control valve alignment.
You may need to replace a cover plate gasket but at least the job can be effected in the boat.

Jamie,
It is not unusual for the box to drag in neutral. if the oil is in good condition and the box drives ahead OK and has not overheated it is fine.
I run with 30 engine oil ( as long as engine doesn't exceed 3000 RPM) in mine and have a little drag when cold. You should be able to stop the shaft rotating.

Have a look at this UTube link its great information

If it ant Broke don't fix it.

Richard

Hi Jamie,
Both my gearboxes drag, neutral. They have been that same for since I bought the boat.
Changing the oil makes no deference… and yes I can stop the shaft rotating with my hand.

Hi,

I don’t suppose you still have one of these for sale.

Urgently on the hunt for one that’s ideally ready to go.

Many thanks

Jamie,

is the problem just that it drags in neutral or is there something else? The manual suggests that for excessive drag (meaning there will always be some), then try the following:

Control linkage improperly adjusted (solution - disconnect linkage and see if it still does it.
Clutch improperly assembled.
Damaged or broken bellevile spring.
Worn or damaged clutch plate.
Planetary gear failure. (you would definitely hear this).

Lancing only have new ones and not reconditioned ones at the moment.

I have the tools needed for a rebuild if you wanted to do it. Stripping is pretty quick and that would help find the problem. I can email the manual as well.

I did suggest previously that adjusting the Control Valve (external proceedure) is provided to assist this issue.
It seems such a lot of work for a simple task, given a replacement box may also need fine tuning!
Has anyone had success with this adjustment?

The shift valve/pressure relief valve only goes in one way so there isn't any adjustment. The adjustment the manual describes is on the gear lever linkage ie if adjusted incorrectly the gearbox shift valve isn't sitting in the detent on the ball bearing.
