Re: stern tube installation? and identification
Hi,
The Stern Tube was usually just a copper tube set into the keel and shaft log. The outboard end just flared over keel.
Flanged at the forward end and the flange screwed to the log it also holds a heavy duty rubber tube which supports the stern gland seal arrangement more or less centred on the stern tube.
The whole lot set in with some mastic of some description.
The Tube is a good clearance diameter on the shaft which is either 1 1/4 or 1 3/8" diameter. There should be no wear on the tube itself unless the shaft was badly out of line.
According to my lists, Hull No. 108 went to The Dell Quay Yacht Company. The 69105 might be the Lloyds Registry No. which is usually accompanied by a tonnage measurement.
Some photos would be helpful.
Regards,
Scott

You might find it useful to look at the manual for the Royal Navy 23ft Fast Motor Boat (=Huntress) BR3929, pages 2.25 to 2.29, and Figure 2.7 (should come after page 2.25). The pages give quite a lot of detail about the stern tube construction. There used to be a copy available on the website. Or send me a message and I will send you a pdf of the relevant pages. In the members' area there is also a note written by Alan Burnard about the shaft gland.
