Playtime refit - part four - engines and a new loo

Post by Ben »

Various reasons for a repower, a long held ambition to self marinise a pair of Cummins B's nearly came to fruition until I was offered a pair of Perkins Sabre M265Ti, clean, very low hours, a bit more than I intended to spend but that's never stopped me!

Rebuilt BW Velvetdrive 72C with new fwd and reverse clutches, seals and gaskets.

Man at R and D says I need a 50 AE 101 but that won't fit, too deep and can't be turned round as the AE element only runs one way. I think I might need a 4 P 5. I'll give him a call.

Nice box Ben. Flying fish has these, taken off the original Perks and fitted to the new 225 TI blocks, with new seals etc. John Shaw said the new engines give 34 knots at 18gph,but of course they are only 205hp as we know. Yours should be good for late 30s.
It would be nice to keep the H28s original in their basic style and engines, but it seems the old Perks are past their sell by date literally from what you have said,
Look forward to the speed trials

Hi Ben that sounds great, good combination and you can sort of look at the 265ti and see the original perkies dna in there!!

Velvet drive boxes so easy to work on, if you are worried about over powering them, and it must be close, there is a trick of putting a washer below the spring in the pressure relief valve which squeezes the plates a bit tighter to cope, if you get really excited there is a kit in the USA which lets them take loads of power.

See you are using good old hammerite, in the end I got fed up with it chipping so easy and switched to a machine paint which seemed to be more durable, need to look at one that's pretty heat proof and colour match not always easy.

Look forward to seeing Playtime in action.

If you're worried about the strength of the gearboxes at that power Ben, Gordon's man breathed on SM's(I think extra plate)and they held at 330-odd hp. Pity the hull wasn't as resilient!!
cheers Jonathan

Ben,

72C will not require any modification at all. Max factory rating @ 2,500 rpm is 450lbs/ft and 220 hp (proper hp none of your weak kneed metric stuff)

Re our conversation, you commented that you are keeping old propellers with a tweak.

If you have 16.75 X 17.75 propellers and have some more pitch graunched into them provided that they are not too tired, taking them up to 16.75 X 19.5 should be feasible.

Always reminding ourselves that propellers move boats engines merely turn them, simply work the calculation backwards and hey presto your revised propellers will be demanding 205 hp at WOT, your Perkins can deliver a maximum of 180kW or 241 hp @ 2500 so life is good, provided of course the new gold plated thunderbox does not impact too greatly on PT II's weight.

Only weak link is the original stainless 304 shafting, you will need something a little more exotic such as Duplex.
Good luck

Paul

PS You obviously liked the liked the lashings of Hammerite blue on my dyno!

Long overdue for an update.

All sorts of things have been conspiring against me, not being in the tent makes a huge difference.

Turns out that my engines could have had one of two injection pumps, I have the bosch ones which can be would up to the M300Ti spec...

This series of pics is a what happened next.

What happened next is that they didn't fit....so we put it all away again.

Bit complicated to explain here, but no big deal, could of things to sort out, hopefully I'll get them in over Christmas. She's parked near and A frame and chain block.

I'm working abroad for a fortnight in January and would like them in place before I go.

Ben, looking at that picture reminded me what an absolute cow the outer aft mounting adjusting nuts are to access. Mine are finger tight as I cannot get a spanner in there, just have to rely on being able to lift the weight off to adjust the back outside mounts. Make sure the nuts on the underside are really well greased and start with the engines high, it is far easier to lower them than crank them up. Then once aligned clamp them tight from above which is pretty easy.

I have had confirmation from the yard - they are in!

I haven't now got a free day to get on the boat until the 16th Feb. I think I'll need to put the tent up, I wasn't going to bother but it'll help me get some time back, I want an early start to the year...get some cold air in those turbos.

Weather, working away and two weekend parties all conspired to keep me away from the boat. Progress resumed last weekend when I managed with the help of dad and a chum to get the tent up, electric and lighting today and made a start on a few things.

Here's what 480hp looks like in a Huntsman 28.

Somebody described the phenomena of 'deferred maintenance', in other words, jobs that were long overdue. It struck me that if I wanted to be able to consider Playtime properly looked after that there shouldn't be anything 'deferred'...

With that in mind...

Topsides needed to go back to bare wood.
Image

With undercoat and extraordinarily expensive easy sand epoxy filler.

Image

Transom on its way back to bare wood, surveyor recommended this 18 months back, pleasingly all sound underneath.

Image

More undercoating, in fact this is the last undercoat and contains about 25% top coat.
Image

How do you lift and shift the engines to get the shaft alignment spot on? Find some chunky timbers in the yard, borrow an antique and incredibly heavy chain block from a chum and...

I had some of the hull badgings polished.

Several redundant skin fittings have been blanked of with wood plugs, remaining skin fittings replaced.

I am trying to have the original Fairey covers that protect the fuel tank vents re-chromed, however, the electroplating industry appears to be run by idiots.

Looking really good. Just one point though, back when Rolf Harris was popular & painting his big piccys on the tv & I was at Golden Arrow Marine we always left the shaft alignment until the boat was in the water as the boats would move when slipped & the alignment would change, sometime by quite a lot. Now I don't think I ever did a Fairey having said all that so they may be different but it made me wonder . . .

Hello Geoff

Quite right, I won't bolt up the coupling until she's afloat and I've rechecked, its a right pain on the H28, to adjust the rear mounts up and down you need to lift the engines, adjust, then lower back down and check. Its a right pain.
